Otamarakau School Keeping it Green with the
“Green Machines”
Working together to make
a difference to the environment (and in following the schools philosophy
to encourage students to become life long learners) has resulted in
Otamarakau School’s “Green Machines” Enviro Group winning a Bronze Award
in the National Enviro Schools Programme.
The “Green Machines”
students celebrated their success recently at the Enviro School Award
Ceremony held at the Sudima Hotel, Rotorua, where they were presented
the award and lunched with Environment Bay of Plenty Councillors. The
day included a visit to the Kiwi Encounter Centre at Rainbow Springs,
providing an excellent learning experience.
The development of a
Native Tree Area to both create a safe habitat for Native birds and act
as an outdoor classroom, beautifying school grounds with sensory and
sustainable gardens and reducing, re-using and re-cycling waste were
some of the projects the “Green Machine” team and the students of the
school completed on their learning journey towards environmental
education, biodiversity, sustainability and kaitiakitanga Judges
commented on the “awesome things the students had created around the
school” and were impressed with how “learning was integrated into the
classroom curriculum. The judges also commented on the planning and
inclusion of Maori perspectives, being some of the best they had seen”.
The “Green Machines”
team have already been busy planning, designing and creating their next
project and are going for GOLD on the road towards creating a healthy,
physically, sustainable school to benefit the whole school and
community.
