Our senior class started the year with a Leadership team building camp at our local Otamarakau Marae. We invited our kaumatua and kuia to hear us recite our pepeha. We made our own Hangi and invited all of our families to our hakari (feast). We loved being at our beautiful Otamarakau Marae.

Otamarakau School sent three teams to compete and one team of cheerleaders to the Comvita 2018 Paengaroa Top Schools games. The students competed in 9 events ranging from the horizontal bungee to the leaky bucket. Thanks Paengaroa School for an awesome event.
2018 - sCHOOL SWIMMING SPORTS - BATTLE OF THE HOUSES
This year we held our School swimming sports at our own swimming pool. Our school houses MCCAW, BLAKE and HILLARY competed for points to win the top house. The senior students also competed in a duathalon. It was a great opportunity for the senior students to look after the junior students and help them with their races.
2018 - deep sea Survival skills
In February 2018, our students enjoyed learning deep sea survival skills at sea. They were taught a huge skills set from how to use life jackets properly and how to survive whilst floating in a Personal Flotation Device (PFS). Our students also learnt how to enter lifeboats correctly, how to use a capsized boat, how to make mayday calls and use different emergency signalling devices.
2018 - mAKERSPACE
Otamarakau School started up our own Makerspace room this year. We have learnt about binary coding, how to put together mbots and lots of other amazing problem solving activities. We also have a lot of other creative things associated with STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It's our space where students and teachers come together to create, invent, design, tinker, explore, code, build, craft and more!
positive behaviour for learning - pb4l
This year Positive Behaviour For Learning (PB4L) school wide started at Otamarakau School. At the beginning of this year teacher's had professional development with the PB4L facilitator. The whole team (all classroom teacher's, RTLB and a parent representative) attended a team day in Te Puke to learn about PB4L school wide (see photo below). PB4L is about building a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life for us here at Otamarakau School. It's not about changing our students, it's about changing the environment, systems and practices we have in place to support them to make positive behaviour choices. We are looking forward to this exciting journey.
2018 - Tennis Training
We had an amazing coach from the Te Puke Tennis Club come to our school to teach our students some Tennis skills for our up and coming Annual Tennis Tournament.
2018 ANNUAL PTA FISHING COMPETITION
Easter Sunday 2018 - Our annual fishing competition was a huge success thanks to our incredible PTA. We had record entries - 471 anglers entered and 127 fish caught. The weather was superb and the prizes were spectacular with one lucky lady winning $4000 for the heaviest Snapper this year. Congratulations Vera! 2018 - ANZAC Service
In week 9, Term 1 we held our ANZAC commemoration service. We invited members of the Te Puke RSA and the RSA Charitable Trust to help us remember the importance of ANZAC day. Our senior prefects Jorjah Rahi-Reeves and Caleb Steiner MC'd the day. Each class performed an ANZAC item such as ANZAC poems, performing ANZAC marches, placing poppies on our ANZAC rock, reading out fallen soldiers names from Otamarakau and singing waiata and haka. Koro John opened and closed our ceremony with karakia. After the ceremony and performances all manuhiri (visitors) were invited into the staff room for morning tea. A koha (donation) for our school was received from the RSA Charitable Trust, thank you.
